Introduced in its prototype form in the late 19th century, the 4-6-2 would take the world by storm at the turn of the 20th century, being seen as one of the biggest innovations in the history of locomotives — the 4-6-2 would quickly find its place in railyards across the world. Heralded for its ability to haul passengers, the 4-6-2 was a versatile model, hauling freight and coal as well, with tank variants being introduced later during the 20th century. Traveling at speeds upwards of 100mph the 4-6-2 was featured on railways ranging from Argentina to Egypt, and all the way to the far East in China!  Now’s your chance to add some history to your collection.

My history with this locomotive:

02/11/2023 – I repaired and retested the locomotive.  I replaced the U-Connector on the motor.  The Loco runs but seems to make a lot of noise and sometimes short s itself when trying to go forward.

02/10/2023 – Original examination and first test.  It did not run. Believed to have split U-Connector on motor side of drive shaft.  I believe I saw I replacement within the owner’s collection.  I cleaned some lint from the wheels.  I also had to glue 3 stanchions back on to hold pipes around top of steam engine on both sides. Needs more cleaning. Roof of Cab slides off pretty greasy. Front simulated lanterns and number board light appear to have been glued on with heavy glue residue. Lots of lint in sprockets.

Please view the video.  While this locomotive runs okay, it has a tendency for the rods connected to the driver to unscrew themselves and come apart.  For this reason, I am including a tool that will adjust the hexagonal head screw that keeps falling out.  My guess is that the screw needs to be tightened a specific amount in order to prevent it from unscrewing or the rods are improperly formed or bent and need to be reformed.  I’ve already invested too much time in this locomotive.  The video proves that the locomotive runs and also shows that it unscrews itself while running.  It also shows that using the Lionel transformer I used for testing, this Southern Crescent Steam Engine by American Models makes more noise than it should, in my opinion.  It blows the horn more often than any locomotive in any scale that I have ever operated.  And it does it on its own.  I am unfamiliar with the type of decoders or mechanisms used by American Models to produce sound effects.  So, it is being sold “as is” and I have reduced the starting price I originally applied to this locomotive by $125 to make it attractive to possible buyers who know how to fix the issues that I’ve mentioned.

This was a LIMITED-EDITION model and is no longer listed or available on American Model’s website.  Sometimes I contact manufacturers to get their input or assistance with issues related to their products.  Thus far, I have not contacted American Models about this particular locomotive.  The buyer may benefit from this in two ways: One, they can contact the manufacturer to get their assistance and 2 they might be able to win this auction for this locomotive for a discounted price.  Between now and when it is sold, if I speak with the manufacturer and get them to fix this or apply any recommendations provided by them, the price will be increased to compensate for any applicable time and materials or actual service fees.
