By itself, this car weighs 3.7 oz. Based on NMRA standards, this car should weigh 5.16 oz. That is a difference of 1.46 oz. Apparently, the previous owner decided to fill the car with loose coal. He did this with 2 cars (another different road number UP Hopper car). When I encountered this, the coal in just one of the cars was enormous. When I put the cars back inside their original boxes for transport from the owner’s home to my place, the loose coal went everywhere. I decided to gather all the coal and then redistribute it. Originally, I simply added enough coal to 1 car to make the car the standard NMRA weight. However, 1.46 oz of coal barely covers the bottom of the hopper and it doesn’t look good. So, instead, I split the coal among 3 cars. I should have selected more hopper cars, because the end result is that far more coal than is necessary now accompanies each hopper car that I used. All that coal now makes this car weigh 13 oz. It looks good but may be too heavy for any locomotive to pull. I didn’t test pull this car with a locomotive after filling it. I put the loose coal in a Ziploc bag so that it can easily be transported inside the box with the car. Until this item is sold, it will continue to be displayed at train shows thus an additional reason for the coal to be in a bag. There is 9.3 oz of coal inside the bag. If the buyer wanted to, they could put something inside the car and then glue just enough coal on it to cover it and have enough coal left over to repeat the process for anywhere from 4 to 8 similar hopper cars or have enough coal to make some very coal rich scenery.
I brush cleaned this car and weighed it on 2/16/2023. This UP74523 Hopper car does not appear on AM’s website and it has a different model number and road number than the other matching UP Hopper car in this lot. This car is priced to include the coal at a real bargain. There are quite a few open hopper cars consigned by this owner that do not have any coal or loads.
