Description
HO scale Lionel 5-5614 GREAT NORTHERN Diesel Engine ALFCO FA-1 #T-12002 DC Locomotive.
This is Good Running DC locomotive. It has 8-Wheel Power pickup, 8-Wheel Drive, good weight, great forward constant lighting, Kadee knuckle coupler in the rear, NMRA standard Hornhook coupler on the front, and low-profile metal wheels. It comes in its original HO Lionel White box. I have made a replacement foam carton insert holder for it. No documentation has been found (yet). The painting is legible and appears to have very few minor scratches.
This handsome Great Northern DC Diesel locomotive is on consignment. It was received in a non-working condition with the rear truck taped in place to the shell. Upon inspection and first battery testing, the wheels spun. So, I endeavored to get it running. A deep inspection revealed that the 2 clamps that hold the plastic frame of the rear truck to the metal truck housing are broken off. The plastic frame holds the axles in place as well as the power washers (not wipers). The 2 washers appear to be copper or brass items that improve power pickup from the axles. Without the plastic frames, the wheels would not stay in place. The best way to fix this issue would be to replace the plastic truck frame. However, my guess is that this locomotive was made a long time ago and I doubt that Lionel has any replacement parts for it. So, in order to get the trucks to stay on without any glue or tape, I used THREAD and routed it around the metal portions of the truck housing and the plastic frame to provide more than adequate securing of the frame to the housing which keeps the axles in place and keeps the conductivity working great.
Another issue found with this locomotive is that the engineer’s rear steps / stirrups was broken off. I glued that back on. However, later, it came off again. I reattached it this time using a little bit of fire to melt it in place. Well, that disfigured the stirrup. It is attached now but doesn’t look as pretty as the other stirrups.
Additionally, the REAR coupler and coupler housing was missing. I removed both of those from the front and placed them on the rear. Later, after another visit to the Consignor’s place, I found the missing rear coupler housing and coupler. I moved the rear coupler back to its original front position. I installed a Kadee coupler inside the housing of the rear coupler. So, now this locomotive has a Kadee knuckle coupler on the rear and a NMRA hornhook coupler on the front. The original hornhook coupler is also available and tucked inside a compartment that I made inside the replacement foam carton. It should be noted that moving the front coupler to the rear caused one of the holding brackets of the coupler housing to be broken off or weak. I used thread here as well and it is keeping the front coupler housing held in place firmly.
If you can see a picture that has red circles around portions of the locomotive, this indicates where I made repairs. With the repairs in place, I put the locomotive on my layout and test ran it. The video of that test run can be seen either below or via the available link. Note that the video was made before I found the rear coupler housing (I think). It runs very well forward and in reverse. It has a bright headlight that is constantly on. The locomotive has very good weight to it too. I didn’t make any attempts to pull any trains with it in the video, but I imagine it can pull train cars with no issues.
I have now retaken all the photos (but not the video). However, only 12 photos get pushed to eBay. Others can see photos including the inside of the locomotive and close-ups of the front and rear couplers. Note that originally the locomotive had U-shaped brackets that hold the top weight down on the frame. These brackets were broken when I opened the shell. I believe the clips on the ends of the brackets were previously broken off. Perhaps over time the brackets became brittle and broke into pieces. The pieces that were recovered are inside the little plastic bag with the original rear coupler that is tucked into the slot that I made in the foam carton. I taped the weight down so that it doesn’t float around inside the shell.
It is believed that the consignor did not operate this locomotive much at all. Additionally, he has consigned a good number of Great Northern passenger cars and several other Great Northern locomotives as well as other rolling stock. If you are interested in this locomotive, you may wish to review my other available listings to acquire as many Great Northern items as possible. Visit often as I continue to list more and more items from this consignor’s collection, most of which are in very good condition, like new, or better.
